The 2008 Epworth Scholarship Program

Epworth United Methodist Church offers several scholarships for our full-time college students or college-bound high school seniors, as well as students attending or planning to enter vocational schools. Applicants may apply for one or more of three scholarships currently available: The Bohrer-German Scholarship for church and community service; the Delbert and Bernice Foster Scholarship for Epworth UMC Confirmands, and the Paul Utterback Memorial Scholarship for community service.

The Bohrer-German and Foster scholarships are endowed, and we are working toward a base endowment of $50,000 for each—an amount that will generate funding for scholarship awards in perpetuity. We are especially hopeful of building up the relatively new Bohrer-German fund. Hearts & Hands Inc. made a set amount available for a scholarship in the memory of Paul Utterback.

Applicants must fill out a scholarship application form, which is available on the church’s website in a printable form by clicking here, in the church office, and in Rev. McCurdy's office. Applications must be received by June 1, 2008, and may be mailed to the church (9008 Rosemont Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20877) or dropped off at the church office. Application envelopes should be marked “Attention: Scholarship Committee.” All applicants must be Epworth UMC members. Applicants for the Foster scholarship must be Epworth confirmands. Applicants for the Bohrer-German and Utterback scholarships must demonstrate a record of community service. The Epworth Scholarship Committee will make award decisions based on merit and need. Applicants should also be aware of the following additional criteria:

  • Scholarships are for full-time undergraduate college students and vocational school students (or high school seniors who are planning to enter an accredited college or vocational institution in 2008).

Awards for graduate studies are not granted through this program.

Applicants must be US citizens or legal permanent residents.

Applicants must include their most recent school transcript.

Applications must be completed in full.

Scholarship awards are for one year only, and re-application is necessary each year.

Be aware that the number of applications may well exceed the available funds, so it is likely that not all eligible applicants will receive awards this year.

The decisions on scholarship awards will be made by members of the Epworth UMC scholarship committee, in consultation with Rev. McCurdy

For additional information, please review the Epworth Scholarship application form, available in the church office and in Rev. McCurdy’s office, or talk with Rev. Sheila McCurdy or Susan Scholl.
